Activity Increase in Banking
The High Net Value (HNV) client market has also remained as mobile as ever and as a result portfolio sizes have increased dramatically. This has in turn meant that many of the banks have had to realign their private banking offering by increasing their private manager head count.
Other sectors currently experiencing a significant rise in levels of activity include management consultancy and retail and fashion.
Is The Private Sector Picking Up The Slack From The Public Sector
There have been several waves of public sector redundancies since the end of last year but the latest jobs figures from the Office for National Statistics, released yesterday, show that unemployment actually fell in the three months to February. The jobless rate is now 7.8 per cent, just below the 8 per cent predicted. This certainly suggests that the private sector has lessened the impact of the public sector redundancies on overall employment but economists are forecasting a substantial increase in the jobless rate by the end of this year.
Public sector employment fell by 132,000 in 2010, with Yorkshire, the North West and Scotland suffering particularly high numbers of redundancies. The headline national statistics can be misleading, failing to fully represent the status quo across the different regions and the CIPD has called for an audit of public sector job cuts to assess the full effects on the labour market.
The good news is that despite popular opinion to the contrary, most public sector workers are highly employable and make good candidates for private sector vacancies. But are there enough private sector jobs available and will the private sector grow quickly enough to keep up with the public sector job cuts? We will just have to wait and see but for now it looks as if the private sector is picking up a lot of the slack from the public sector.

What Could 2012 Have In Store For International Recruitment
This time last year we wrote our first ever blog post. With the New Year rapidly approaching, we decided to look into our recruitment crystal ball and see what lay ahead for recruiters in 2011. Now we’re going to look back at those predictions and make some more for 2012.
Last December we anticipated a tough job market in Europe, particularly in Greece and Spain. While this has proved true we could not have predicted the current debt crisis in the Eurozone and the full extent of further damage to the employment figures in Europe remains to be seen. Employment in the US has, however, risen over the past few months and we hope that this trend will continue throughout next year. The current levels of uncertainty mean that it is hard to predict what will happen in the marketplace in 2012. We’re determined to remain optimistic and as ever, we hope that this year will bring encouraging results for our franchise partners around the world. We would love to hear how your year has been so please feel free to tweet us @CNAFranchising.
New Year, New You, New Career
It’s the time of year when we all start thinking about changes we’d like to make in our lives. Whether we want to lead a healthier lifestyle, be more sensible with money or achieve a professional goal, January is the time to turn over that new leaf. For those of us who feel ready for a change in our working lives the New Year is often the most popular time to begin looking for a new job. But could there be a better option than just another job?
Franchising opportunities often aren’t at the forefront of people’s minds but becoming part of a franchise could bring just the kind of rewarding change you are looking for. By choosing to become one of our franchise partners you will enjoy all the benefits of owning your own recruitment business and being your own boss but you will also have the full support of CNA, which is part of the Pertemps Group, the UK’s largest independent recruitment business. Here at CNA we have launched a franchise recruitment service to help potential franchisees find the right niche for them. For more information about this service and about the benefits of franchising please visit www.cna-international.com.
Executive Recruitment On The Road To Recovery
CNA is continuing to experience levels of activity that fly in the face of the downturn. The jobs statistics are concerning and the UK may technically be back in recession but we’re finding that executive level recruitment is showing promising signs of recovery.
We’re seeing a genuine upswing in recruitment in terms of real placements and not just bullish positive talk. Furthermore, this trend does not appear to be restricted to one sector, with lots of new positions cropping up across the board, from facilities management to construction, from banking to new media and IT. Long may it last!
We’re also thrilled to welcome even more new franchise partners to help us meet the recruitment demand created by this flurry of vacancies. We are anticipating three or more new partners joining the CNA ranks by the end of April, with potentially more starting as we head into summer.
We’re always keen to work with more new CNA franchise partners so if you think you might be interested in finding out more about what we have to offer then please do contact us on 01676 822 222.
Three New Partners Join Us In January
CNA Executive Search would like to congratulate the three new Senior Partners who have recently joined us.
Ian Allen has worked as a consultant in the automotive industry for many years as well as penning his own regular column for the motor trade magazine Auto Retail Network. As a CNA Senior Partner he will specialise in placing candidates in executive automotive retail and auction positions.
Satyajit Kumar joins us with over 10 years of running his own IT contracting agency in the UK, Bahrain and India. He joins CNA as a Senior Partner with a team of two based in London to rebuild the IT Contracting / Interim side and develop the Executive Search side of the IT sector.
Paul Lawrence joins CNA as the Senior Partner responsible for Facilities Management and Corporate Services. Paul has 12 years experience as a headhunter and business owner and is looking to build the CNA brand in this growing sector.
If you would like to follow in the footsteps of our senior partners and join the expanding CNA team then please feel free to get in touch. Becoming a CNA franchise partner represents an exciting opportunity for you to transform your career whilst continuing to work in a sector you love. For more information please contact Nick Sprang on 01676 822 222.
Do Not Believe Everything You Read In The Newspapers
The statistics are gloomy and the headlines are even worse but here at CNA things couldn’t be better. We’re benefiting from an unexpected upturn in job vacancies for senior executives across a number of different sectors. Furthermore, we’ve been joined by three more new franchise partners, who we hope will help us to meet the sharp increase in demand.
In the last month alone we have acquired more than 40 new roles in the £60k to £100k salary bracket in a wide range of sectors. We need candidates available to start these jobs immediately. If you would like to find out more about any of these roles then please contact us today.
Graham Dixon, Michelle Chandler and Paul Lawrence are our latest new recruits. The trio came on board as CNA franchise partners in February. Graham will be recruiting medical locums, Michelle will focus on filling positions in charities and the third sector, and Paul will be recruiting for roles in facilities management.
We're eager to welcome more new franchise partners to CNA so if you think you might be interested in finding out more then please do contact us on 01676 822 222.
Fashion & Retail Activity by Nick Thompson
Every day clients and candidates ask me how the fashion and retail employment market is looking. My response is that employers are being especially cautious at the moment. Companies are giving careful consideration to whether or not hiring someone is really necessary, avoiding doing so if at all possible and putting strain on existing teams whose numbers are smaller than they once were. Where new employees are needed, companies are being more discerning than ever when it comes to ‘getting the right fit’. In some cases this is leading to lengthy decision-making processes, frustrating line managers and candidates alike.
Candidates are being equally cautious, often adopting a ‘better the devil you know’ mentality and deciding to stick with their existing employers rather than face the potential risks associated with a move. Positions with flexible working hours are proving popular however, as candidates seek an alternative to fashion’s long-hours culture, which has become even more time demanding in recent years.
Despite these factors, there has been a surprising amount of activity of late. Competition amongst employers for candidates with sought-after skills is fiercer than ever and top performing candidates in these areas are increasingly aware of their worth.
Hanging On The Telephone - CNA Winter Conference
In January we held the CNA Winter Conference, offering our partners a chance to get together and discuss how the land lies in recruitment across their different sectors.
Recruitment veteran Roy Ripper of Recruitment Juice came along to impart some wise words with regard to best practice and defining ‘the way we do things at CNA’. One particular sticking point and the focus of this blog was whether we do things on the phone or via email and whether we should do things on the phone or via email. Is it better to offer a verbal presentation of a candidate rather than just sending across a CV?
There are innumerable benefits to picking up the phone. Unfashionable though it may be to resort to such antiquated technology (the telephone was invented in 1876), there is no better way to develop a rapport with someone when meeting up is impractical. Better still, you can hear your client’s reaction to the information you relay, helping you to better understand what it is specifically that they like or dislike about a particular candidate’s CV.
But email is just so convenient, everything is there in black and white and clients can refer back to it at a time that suits them. So why not call and email? If the call is made as you click send then not only are you covering off the legal aspect of presenting a candidate, you are also giving the client the opportunity to choose their preferred method of reviewing the information supplied.
Introducing Gavin Chase
Gavin has taken the plunge to setup his own CNA International franchise business. Trained by James Caan, Gavin has been a franchisee in the past owning and running his own Human International franchise.
Gavin choose to start his own CNA franchise as he recognised the huge opportunity currently available to setup his own executive search recruitment company at the bottom of the market. Clearly in the middle of a recession the only way is up, it is just a question of when!
A Successful Open Event
The Network Brand Partnerships Open Event held at the Pertemps Meriden Hall earlier this week was a great success. The BFA (British Franchise Association) and HSBC Bank provided advice on selecting and financing the right franchise business. Prospective franchise partners then went on to find out more about the different business opportunities offered by Network Brand Partnerships.
Paul Hanke, Managing Director of Network Health and Social Care, and CNA Franchise Partner, Nick Thompson, both gave some real life accounts of what is involved in running each of the businesses. There were plenty of questions!
One thing that did come across very clearly was the incredible level of support provided to franchise partners to ensure the success of their new business.
CNA Takes On The National Franchise Exhibition
This year CNA took a stand at the National Franchise Exhibition on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October. The show is the largest franchise exhibition in the UK and aims to introduce would-be franchisees to different franchise businesses from a variety of sectors. This year the 150 exhibitors included Subway, Go Cruise and Agency Express and there were also some franchise savvy guest speakers, such as Chris Sargeant who founded The Handmade Burger Co and Hannah Wolsey, managing director of The Urban Coffee Company.
Although it wasn’t as busy as last year, no doubt partly due to the glorious weather that weekend, the exhibition proved itself to be well worth the CNA team’s time, with 25 quality leads generated over the course of two days. Providing support and assistance to those interested in taking the first steps towards a franchise business is a crucial part of what we do and the exhibition provides the perfect opportunity to share our experience and knowledge of the recruitment industry with others.
October has been an incredibly busy month for CNA, with placement forms coming in thick and fast. It goes without saying that we’re hoping this will continue into next year.
Next year the National Franchise Exhibition will take place at the NEC in Birmingham on 5 and 6 October. For more information visit: www.franchiseinfo.co.uk.
SAP Hire Join CNA
Stephen Hall, the Managing Director of SAP Hire International Limited, has been working in the recruitment Industry since 1988. He has built several multi-million pound niche recruitment companies, one of which he sold to James Caan. He has also helped over 200 recruiters exceed their targets as a mentor. Stephen and the team have recently joined CNA International.
We decided to invest in becoming part of CNA International due to the market leading management systems and guaranteed cash flow that franchise partners receive. For those in recruitment already, or people looking for a solid business I can highly recommend CNA International,” commented Stephen.
Established as a franchise in 1993 CNA International is a Full BFA Member with 27 franchisees operating.
Tricky Times For interim Management
The recession and the subsequently subdued economy have had an interesting impact on interim management.
According to the Interim Management Association, new interim management assignments were down 25 per cent in 2010 compared to the previous year. This is not surprising but hidden within the overall decrease are some remarkably buoyant sectors, including manufacturing and public sector health, which both showed an increase in new interim managers.
Given the continued economic uncertainty that businesses face, it is worth questioning why the flexibility and short-term nature of interim management does not appeal more. Highly skilled interim managers can be in place within days and be gone as and when required. Perhaps part of the problem is that some of these highly skilled individuals have decided that despite the lucrative day rates offered, interim management now poses too much of a risk, leading them to opt instead for the security of permanent employment.
According to Contract Eye this is exactly what has happened in the case of younger interim managers, who have more or less vanished from the market place to fill now more desirable permanent vacancies.
Here at CNA we’ll be keeping a close eye on the interim management market to see how it changes in the face of the continuing government cuts.
What Does 2011 Hold For International Recruitment
As 2011 begins in what is still a challenging global economy we thought we would take some time to consider which trends we may see emerging in international recruitment during the next 12 months.
The job market in Europe looks set to remain tough, particularly in Greece, Spain, Iceland, the Czech Republic and Austria but Asia, Australasia and the Middle East are all showing more favourable signs. Despite the difficult market in Europe, research from the Krauthammer Observatory found that just four in ten workers want to stay with their current employer for the next 12 months. In the long term this will mean employers will have to do more to retain top talent.
According to Manpower, worldwide companies are planning to recruit more in the first quarter of 2011 than they did during the same period in 2010, particularly in India, China, Taiwan, Brazil and Turkey, an encouraging indication that this year could see more mobility and a marked growth in the international jobs market.
We’re looking forward to seeing what this year will bring for our franchisees around the world and we hope they will benefit from the improvements we’re likely to see in some areas.
CNA Launches International Franchise Opportunities
The success of CNA International has led to a natural progression for the company to begin offering Country/Master franchise opportunities. With the backing of the Pertemps Group and their industry leading systems this executive search recruitment franchise is an attractive business opportunity.
CNA International still has sectors available in the UK and Europe, in fact the model has already been proven across the World, so the addition of the Master Franchise opportunity makes complete sense. As a Master Franchisee you will recruit your own network of franchise partners in your designated country or region. Now with the backing of the Pertemps Group, the UK’s largest independent groups of recruitment businesses, you can build your own successful executive search business across the many sectors in your own territory. Prices for a CNA International Master Franchise start at £40,000 and vary depending on the markets potential.
CNA’s franchise partners enjoy fantastic financial rewards from their businesses, on average earning £115k in gross profits last year, with the highest managing over £600,000. This combined with CNA’s unique invoice factoring service, where all your sales invoices are paid on a set date every month ensures you are always in control of your cash flow.
CNA offers franchise partners the opportunity to build the lifestyle they have always wanted, allowing them to choose the scale at which they wish to operate their business based on their motivations and ambitions. Some franchise partners choose to build an empire of offices, whilst others prefer to operate on a smaller scale and work from their home. Franchise partners have the flexibility to fit their business around their lifestyle, whether this is spending more time with the family or taking part in leisure activities.
In the UK, the success and solidity of the CNA International business model has been recognised and approved by all the major banks. CNA is also currently offering flexible franchise fee payment options.
Is The Jobs Market Moving In The Right Way Again?
In October we learned that the UK’s jobless rate fell to a 15-month low. The previous slump in public sector employment had slowed significantly and private sector employment had risen substantially. That left the jobless rate at 7.9 per cent, the number of those out of work having fallen by 50,000 to fewer than 2.53 million and the number of those employed having risen by 212,000 to 29.6 million, the highest increase in UK employment since records began 40 years ago.
The Office for National Statistics data also showed that wage growth had finally picked up across the economy, with a 1.7 per cent increase in average earnings in the three months to August when compared to the same period in 2011. Furthermore, a Legal & General survey found that 78 per cent of workers feel secure in their jobs, which can only be a good thing.
These welcome statistics reflect our own experience of the UK jobs market so far this year. There has been a noticeable uplift and the market seems to be moving forward, particularly at executive level. We have noticed that more and more employers are looking to recruit for executive positions and as a result we have been successfully placing more candidates in executive jobs.
Europe, however, remains a concern with unemployment in the Eurozone at a record 11.6 per cent, that’s 18.49 million people out of work. But perhaps things are looking better beyond the Eurozone? We recently read that Russia’s biggest bank, Sterbank, is offering 100 customers of its Kazakhstani branch a solid gold bank card bejewelled with 26 diamonds, so it can’t be all doom and gloom beyond UK shores!
We have been keeping a close eye on the Middle East too. Earlier this year the International Labour Organisation predicted that youth unemployment in the Middle East would rise from 26.9 per cent to 29 per cent by 2016. Youth unemployment is not our area of expertise, but as the dust settles after the economic uncertainty in the wake of the Arab Spring, we’re seeing executive level recruitment activity in the Middle East picking up again and we feel that it is once more an expanding market.
2012 CNA Annual Conference
CNA has hosted its first annual conference since becoming the executive search arm of the Pertemps Group.
The conference, which took place at Meriden Hall in Coventry, saw CNA senior partners from the UK and Europe gather to discuss their experiences and exchange advice. The aim of the event was to identify the best ways to continue to build on the success the organisation has had to date, including how to capitalise on its ‘brand partnership’ with Pertemps. This partnership sees CNA recruiters benefit from the infrastructure and resources Pertemps has accrued, whilst independently operating their own recruitment business and enjoying the benefits of being their own boss.
Pertemps has more than 50 years’ experience in recruitment and the organisation is able to offer invaluable insights to the CNA partners.Founded in 1961 when Constance Watts opened the first Pertemps office on Temple Street in Birmingham, the agency grew rapidly.By the 1980s there were 25 Pertemps branches and by the year 2000 that number had quadrupled.

CNA Working With The Motor Industry
Recruitment firm CNA International is pushing ahead with a scheme to recruit sales staff from outside the motor retail sector, including the brown and white goods and mobile phone sectors.
Ian Allen, senior automotive partner with CNA International, said the consultancy piloted a scheme at the beginning of 2013.
“For some time it has been in my mind that for car sales vacancies, there is the usual churn of applicants. It is musical chairs with the same people almost. There needed to be some new impetus in new car sales,” he told Motor Trader.
“We have been advertising on various job boards for people who have sales experience in other areas, mobile phones, brown and white goods, people who would be interested in a career in the car trade and car sales. We have been inundated by some very high quality applications. There are about 750 CVs sitting on our database at the moment,” he said.
“Basically we are getting these people, supplying them with some basic motor industry knowledge. They clearly have sales and customer service experience anyway. There is also a basic psychometric profile for the potential employer. We are offering them to motor retailers as somebody new and fresh without motor trade bad habits but with fabulous sales and customer service experience. It is really beginning to bear fruit now,” he added.
The UKs Leading Franchise Exhibition Is In Town
Temperatures may still be mild but it’s definitely starting to feel like autumn and in the franchise world that means only one thing, the National Franchise Exhibition.
Here at CNA we’re gearing up for the exhibition, which takes place later this week in Birmingham. It offers anybody interested in starting a business as part of a franchise the opportunity to talk to representatives from well-known franchise brands, including CNA. We’ll be on hand to answer any questions you may have about running a recruitment business, becoming a franchisee and what to expect from the recruitment market in current economic conditions. You’ll also be able to attend informative seminars about franchising where industry leaders will offer expert advice.
The National Franchise Exhibition is supported by the British Franchise Association (BFA) and only companies that meet the BFA’s code of ethics are able to exhibit at the event. The National Franchise Exhibition takes place on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th October at the NEC in Birmingham. You can book your tickets here.
If you would like to make an appointment to speak to a CNA representative, you can book one here. We look forward to seeing you there.

Senior Sales Consultant
We ran the first master class last Thursday and the feed back so far has been very positive. Russell Moore provided an amusing and instructive day with a number of hard truths about activity and the level that we should be pitching at. If you did not attend, please have a chat with the people who did as we will be running more master classes throughout the year, the next one being 3 April.
Over the day a number of different areas came up that the delegates would like to cover in April:
Taking a full Job order to maximise your chance of filling the role
Understanding your candidate (CABS)
Building your network at the same time
Here are a couple of comments about the day:

CNA Contribute To Research Into Gender Diversity
We recently contributed to research into Gender Diversity And Executive Search Firms with the Recruitment & Employment Federation (REC). https://www.rec.uk.com. As one of Europe’s largest independent recruiters we have a vital role in helping businesses source the right talent and a balanced workforce better serves businesses.
For example, the report shows;
Companies with more women on their board shows 42% higher return on sales, a 66% higher return on invested capital and a 53% higher return on equity.
The final report makes the following recommendations for headhunters, business leaders and policy makers.Executive search firms should publish measurable data on the proportion of women on long and short-lists, the percentage of female appointments and female placements by salary band. This should include not just board appointments but those of leadership and management teams. Data should be published periodically, e.g. in annual reports. The report also recommends that firms explain what steps they take to promote and uphold the voluntary code of conduct and its values in their annual reports and on their website and consider publishing the gender make-up of their own boards and senior teams .It suggests that the recruitment/executive search industry should compile a compendium of good practice. Lastly, the government should continue to focus on this issue and use its influence to drive progress towards the goal of 25% female board representation by 2015.
The report highlights where executive search firms are making a difference for women in senior leadership and where challenges still exist and it encourages more executive search firms to be open about their valuable work and to go even further.

CNA Welcome Dave Hill!
CNA have welcomed a new Senior Partner, Dave Hill. Dave will be working as an independent franchise recruiter working with a large number of franchisors and will introduce potential franchisees to these organisations.
Dave has always had an interest in the franchising industry and has previously worked as a franchising consultant assisting entrepreneurs and working as a career changer to find people their own ideal franchise opportunity that fits them best. Dave has previously worked alongside CNA to find potential franchisees and liked how CNA offers resources, expertise, networks and infrastructure to it's Senior Partners and has taken the opportunity to embark on this new journey with us, we are very happy to have him on-board.
Dave says "CNA international was already one of the companies I was dealing with. A well-known, successful and reputable franchise organisation in the recruitment sector, it occurred to me that in essence what I was trying to achieve was in fact recruiting franchisees for franchise businesses as opposed to the typical recruitment of employee’s. Fortuitously I discovered that this was a sector that CNA had been looking for someone to work in as they also felt it had significant potential...My ambition now therefore is to grow this, to make it a successful operation by capitalising on my own background of people management and mentoring spanning the past 25 years and help other people find successful and suitable franchise businesses to match their own personal circumstances."
We wish you every success with us at CNA Dave!
If you are considering franchising your business or buying a franchise then please feel free to contact Dave on Dave.Hill@cnaint.com for more information about what he can offer you.

USED CAR QUALITY – THE PERFECT STORM
Interesting to note the figures put out by CAP this week, in relation to the increasing amount of older cars now” clogging” up auction centres. Currently 21% of cars in auction are 10 years old or older compared to 7% in 2008. Used car retail sales will hit the 7 million transaction mark in the UK this year and as such will outsell new cars by a ratio of just under 3 to 1. This has created an increase in demand for used car stock from both the franchise and indepent sector. Resultantly motor retailers have found themselves selling cars of an age and mileage that they perhaps wouldn’t have considered in previous years of plentifull stock supply. Enter the new consumer legislation Act which has come into effect from 1st October this year, which refers to all consumer purchases and has particular relevance to the used car sector. Within this new legislation consumers can return a product to the supplier within 30 days of purchase if it has a fault and have a full refund. The consumer does not need to allow the supplier the opportunity to rectify the fault. As a result of this legislation 2 things both are and will continue to develop.
- Car retailers will refine the age, mileage and condition of used cars that they retail. This will mean more cars being disposed of at auction, which may put downward pressure on price realisation.
- There will be increased demand for quality used cars from both the franchised and independent used car sector, which will put upward pressure on acquisition prices for good stock, which will put margins under pressure.
There is also the potential for a slight collision of used car prices if there should be an abundance of pre reg and demo stock hitting the marketplace, resulting in a lowering of values, along with an increase in prices for traditional 2 – 4 year old used cars. No need for panic in the sector, however there is a definite need for enhanced used car stock / pricing and overage control, as the tendancy is to put too much margin in the car that you may have just paid too much for. Equally, px prices will need to be realistic and px disposal will need to be rapid, otherwise auction houses will be” clogged” up even more. Life as a CNA International executive search franchise newbie!
Nicola Morris had enjoyed over 15 years’ experience in recruitment and human resources across both public and private sectors including retail, regulation and marketing sectors. Her career was feeling pretty good…. And then…..
After a couple of redundancies in the space of 6 months she needed to review where her career was going. She’d spent all of her working life supporting managers and businesses, with at times very little recognition, and decided that now was the time she wanted to be her own boss for a change.
“I was also becoming frustrated with the concepts that most businesses adopt ie that time working + physical presence = results.”
Having a young family – 2 boys aged 10 and 8, and the constant stream of after school activities and morning assemblies, meant that not many new employers would welcome Nicola into their business with open arms!
Nicola is extremely ambitious and wanting to make a success of herself. “I felt the only way I was able to work hard and achieve success in a flexible way was to work for myself. “
At the end of 2014 Nicola registered a limited company called Embed People Solutions with the aim to work in partnership with SMEs to support their recruitment, on-boarding and HR activities. After much time networking and marketing the new business she realised a sole proprietor her offerings were not niche enough and in truth she was an extremely small fish in a HUGE pond.
With her HR and Organisational Development background it was obvious where her specialism should sit but the thought of re-branding was a scary prospect.
More by luck than judgement Nicola was introduced to Gavin Chase, a 20 year veteran of the recruitment industry and the Franchise Development Partner at CNA International executive search.
“I quickly saw the benefit of joining an established brand, being part of a bigger organisation whilst still maintaining control of my own business and success…”
Nicola invested in her franchise with CNA International, Part of the Pertemps Network Group of companies in March 2015.
Within a week Nicola was feeling the benefits of being part of a larger group of like-minded entrepreneurs. Contrary to even the franchisor’s expectations she had some immediate successes with new clients and revenues that allowed her the time to build a flourishing recruitment business.
In September this year she was invited by the CNA Central & Eastern European offices to fly out to Slovakia as a guest speaker and panel member along with expert speakers from Deloitte, BPP, MetLife and T-Systems. This was a three day HR event co-hosted by American Chamber of Commerce with the key theme around Talent Acquisition and Talent Management.
“I had the opportunity to visit three major cities in Slovakia – Bratislava, Kosice and Zilina – whilst being on the same platform as a keynote speakers and experts from a global Top 4 Consultancy. It would never happen as a sole trader!”
“I am excited about growing my business over the next few years under the CNA International brand. It has given me the profile, credibility and confidence to excel at what I love. Finding a franchise was definitely the right thing for me.”

The challenges of starting a small business and keeping it going cannot be underestimated and many do fail, even in the very good times.
The hurdles can be substantial and the ability to get a business out the speed, making profit and supporting you is not achieved by many. Franchising has attracted the attention of many over past years
and the tough economic climate has highlighted its strenghts and shown that there is a more secure way to start your own business.
Its formula of a locally owned and run enterprise, driven by a small business owner, with branding, economies of scale and support from the wider network ,given the business a far better chance of success. However, this is only the case if it is done well.
Good franchise opportunities will offer you a proven business format with the initial and continuing support that you will need. Your business will work under an established brand using the business system CNA have developed and proven in the marketplace.

I’ve never experienced conflict in my team…
Said no manager EVER.
There will be, most certainly, occasions where as managers you are required to mediate difficult, and at times, mind blowingly frustrating situations. Mediation is a well-known workplace tool to manage this conflict and is very much aligned to being aware of personalities and behaviours of the parties involved and helping to balance these.
Workplace conflict is inevitable and if managed wisely will lead to innovation and increased efficiency. But if left unresolved will often lead to unhappy employees and a loss of productivity.
Below are some basic tips and strategies to resolve workplace conflict.
(If you’d like to learn more about the subject, CNA International and Higgs & Sons Solicitors are partnering up to host an HR event which will take a closer look at this subject. Details at the bottom.)
- It is key that you meet all parties individually first. Based on your individual meetings you will have a clearer picture of the key issues, what each person considers important and the common ground. These are the key ingredients to a successful mediation – satisfying each person’s needs as much as possible and bringing the people together, based on common ground.
- Arrange to meet with all people collectively. Encourage each person to come together and to summarise their view, uninterrupted. This is essential as often people involved in conflict do not feel heard. Sometimes resolving workplace conflict is as easy as providing a forum for people to express their views.
- Ensure that you pay careful attention to each person’s concerns. Sometimes people have shifted since your first meeting. Do not bring up issues that they decide are not important at the initial meeting. They may have changed their mind and this can create unnecessary conflict. Listen really carefully to all the issues so that you can ensure that all the concerns raised are addressed.
- Summarise the key issues once you have heard from all the people concerned. Ensure that you pay close and equal attention to everyone’s needs. Failing to do so may lead to others feeling that you are biased towards one person or another.
- It is important that you encourage the people involved to discuss options for resolution. Always try to get more than three options on the table so you don’t just have their positions. Reality test the options. Use “What if…” questions to help ensure that the proposed solutions are practical and will work back on the job.
- Next is the Negotiation If people start freely negotiating at this stage, do not interrupt them. This is your chance to sit back and listen. If they get stuck at any stage try summarising what they have achieved so far and remind them of the agreements they have reached.
- At the end of the meeting Ensure everyone involved is satisfied before concluding. Check in with each person that they feel heard and have had their needs met to some extent. Explaining to people at the outset that resolution is often about meeting their most important needs, not all their needs, helps with setting up realistic expectations.
Sounds easy doesn’t it?! Well as you’ll well know it’s not! I very often use these steps with my 10 year old and 8 year old boys – with a small percentage of success. We continue to hope that our adult colleagues are more reasonable though….
